straight bad ass

Interesting sociological look into sub culture of Straight Edge X. They are actually forming gangs and becoming violent...fighting against others.

in nyc today? become the man

Via The Urban Speaker! This art installation allows anyone to broadcast their voice in public. The installation has a number where people can dial in and record up to 60 seconds. Also equipped with a QR code, users can access the mobile site via phone and utilize for quick dial. This culture-jamming execution is intentionally trying to push the boundaries of media and public space, especially who is allowed to distribute messages.

design + function = Sanyo

The new Sanyo bike is super rad as it charges itself throughout your ride so that when you have to tackle hills it will do most of the work. I have a feeling these types of innnovations will increase larger adoption of bicycle riders, especially within metropolitan areas. Well done.

The boys in Pittsburgh will be reinventing the ways we use ketchup with the newly redesigned ketchup packet. I am personally a huge fan of the new packet. I was confused as to why it was taking so long to redesign (40 years!). Well done.

Hi real world, meet the internet

On November 2nd our friends at Metaio will be launching Junaio. Junaio is an augmented reality experience available on the iPhone that allows users to share information in much more functional ways via the real world. Imagine walking down the street and being able to tag information to landmarks, find out what your friends wrote about a restaurant, recieve information about a historic feature/landmark. It is basically allowing the user to stream internet data and apply internet functionality to the real world. I have yet to see this product in action or even view a demo. They have an animated video here, but its animated so you don't really get an understanding of look, feel and functionality.
More to come...

oh i see what yo talkin about

So what the deal with all of this? Well its an emerging trend within journalism using visualization as a way of telling stories. These images were ripped from Visual Editors, a social network of photo, video and designed skilled journalists.
I have over the past 6 months or so become somewhat obsessed with data visualization and utilizing visuals for storytelling. There has been a plethora of appetizing content at there on the subject including NY Times, FlowingData, Flickr, Fidgt, and Visual Journalism. Oh, and I couldn't forget the godfather of data visualization that Himmelsblog turned me onto recently: Edward Tufte.
Delivering visuals and using data visualization has been a creative way for storytelling, but more importantly provides robust information in a digestible and comprehensible form.

reclaimed for art

Something monumental happened this weekend in NYC. A group of people demanded their public space back and they did it with remarkable artistic success. Pissed off and turned off by the force fed obtrusive nature of advertisements in the neighborhood, a group organized by Jordan Seiler took over 120 billboards. The program aptly named "New York Street Advertising Takeover" was 4 months of coordination. All the billboards were white washed by dozens of volunteers wearing orange vests on Saturday the 25th.

Followed by 40-80 artists (who will be named later...hard to tell who all was involved at this point) who transformed the once ad space into pieces of extraordinary art.

This guerrilla-style transformation was illegal per se, but was in retaliation of illegal activity by the actual advertisements themselves. You see, billboards have to be registered with the city. The owner of these billboards, NPA Outdoor, has over 500 street level billboards in the city, 132 which are illegal (or not registered with New York City). Although illegal, they are rarely prosecuted allowing them to dominate our public neighborhood and collect big time profits at the same time.

Obviously a well coordinated effort between Jordan, the volunteers and the artists. Most likely done in conjunction with or the knowledge of Municipal Landscape Control Committee of New York City because they were able to pinpoint exact billboards that were illegal. Many activists have been in contact with NYC Department of Buildings in regards to the invasion of advertisements by NPA Outdoor.

Many of the pieces I have seen thus far contained messages of pro art, self choice and anti-consumerism.

Stay tuned for actual artist participation and more pieces of work.

ideas and art for the man

Psychogeography: is the "emotional effect" of the "geographic environment."

Detournement: involves “re-appropriating” art, media, even ideas; it repurposes and transforms cultural objects and messages.

as a strong proponent of street art, my thoughts are best emphasized by John Hargrave's comments in the movie: "During the day I have a respectable day job at a local ad agency and by night I am seeking to undermine the very system I am building during the day. I am fighting against the man at the same time I am the man."

branding's new architecture

As mentioned in my last post that I would highlight a noteworthy case of IMC being supremely implemented, I have to mention Bob Greenberg’s recent Adweek column, Branding in a New Dimension. Bob makes some interesting and insightful points, especially in regards to Apple’s branding. When talking about IMC we focus on all consumer touch points and the ability to create an intertwined unified branded experience. Bob makes a great point that in today’s landscape the consumer is most likely to enter a brand experience digitally (where the relationship is created). With this in mind we know that there a vast amount of digital entry points which need to all be working together. His Apple reference is key because no matter where the consumer is activated (application, web property, mobile, etc) Apple’s use of design and user experience is harmonious with everything else they do. Meaning that no matter where the consumer is or where they are navigating the look, feel, and functionality is of Apple brand features, usability, and attributes. He makes a great point that it is the collision of advertising and design, which should be strategically developed as one. “How the brand behaves in the digital space is quintessentially Apple. The novel way a user interacts with the devices is as much a component of branding as the logo is,” mentions Greenberg.

And although IMC takes in consideration all facets of communication such as PR, TV, event, etc it is the increased significance of digital in the consumer experience. Digital has more efficiently bridged and linked other areas of communication to make our job, as marketers, a more efficient and effective process. Take PR for instance, the explosion of blogs, digital connections, consumer-generated content, and social media has blurred PR’s traditional philosophy and approach to where new strategies contain heavy digital/Web 2.0 play. Being in a digital atmosphere, the point of PR’s action to the consumer’s activation with the brand experience is only a click away (not be cliché).

What the article does not get into is how brands are effectively bridging gaps and developing activation links from other traditional touch points. I am speaking more broadly beyond simple mobile tagging or URL mentions in print and TV to a fully synchronous design and experience. For instance, TV creative is not truly integrated because there is a link for a user to check out or a coupon they can sign up for. It is designing the commercial to carry the same aesthetics and functional attributes that are utilized in the digital atmosphere and culture of the brand. Because the consumer is most likely to enter the brand experience digitally, the initializing motivator (TV commercial) should be rhythmically consistent with the consumer’s proactive digital action and experience. I think this opens up unlimited creative and innovative opportunities through all touch points, which few to no one are currently employing. Creativity is still the most important factor in branding.

Now all you have to worry about is how you will develop a robust engaged community of brand participants after getting them there…to be continued…
